Somerset Student from the New Brunswick Area Branch of the NAACP medaled in the NAACP’s National ACT-SO competition
Silver Medal Awarded to Franklin High School Graduating Senior
(New Brunswick, NJ) July 31, 2010 – Thirteen students from the New Brunswick Area participated in the 32nd annual NAACP National ACT-SO Competition held this July 8th-13th in Kansas City, MO. There, hundreds of high school students, represented from every state in the country, converged on the Kansas City Convention Center to compete in 26 different categories which includes sciences, humanities, performing arts, visual arts and business.
Jalyssa James, a graduating senior from Franklin High School in Somerset, NJ, was awarded with a Silver Medal in the category of Music Vocal Contemporary for her rousing rendition of “I Have Nothing”, by Whitney Houston. Ms. James also received scholarship money. This fall, Ms. James will continue her studies at Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.
Shaun Adams, chairperson of the New Brunswick ACT-SO Branch, is tremendously proud of all of his students. "ACT-SO is a true community effort of love for our children", says Mr. Adams.
The competition, spearheaded by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, has given New Jersey students an outlet to showcase their talents since 1989.
About ACT-SO
ACT-SO is an acronym that stands for Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics. The program, which is a community volunteer effort, culminates in a local and national competition where students compete for awards, and prizes totaling over $50,000. The students are mentored in character education as well as their chosen projects. The adults embrace and implement the adage "It takes a village to raise a child."
